Boat Cruises & Harbour Tours
RAGLAN HARBOUR CRUISE

The Raglan Harbour Cruise is one of those experiences that makes you wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. Local identity Ian Hardie has been plying the waters of Whāingaroa Harbour for over 32 years, arriving in Raglan back in 1978 as a young surfer from Timaru and eventually founding Raglan Harbour Cruises in the summer of 1991. His small, distinctive blue-canopied cruise boat takes visitors into parts of the harbour that can only be reached by water — an area rich in history and world-class scenery, including 30-million-year-old sedimentary pancake rocks formed largely from ancient zooplankton, and the unique cliff formations that line the conservation reserve directly across from Raglan township. It’s a slow, unhurried way to see Raglan from a completely different perspective — perfect for families, couples, or anyone who just wants to sit back, breathe in the harbour air, and let someone who genuinely loves this place tell you about it.
RAGLAN BOAT CHARTERS

One of the most popular things to do in Raglan — and for good reason. Departing from Raglan Wharf aboard the Wahinemoe, a purpose-built 15x5m catamaran, the cruises explore the charm of Whāingaroa Harbour past large conservation reserves, farmland, and fishing villages, with knowledgeable crew sharing fascinating tales about the history and culture of this very special area. The harbour itself covers 3,185 hectares of nationally recognised conservation area with over 140km of coastline, more than 2 million trees planted over the past decade, and is an important habitat for resident, rare, threatened, and international migratory bird species — with the critically endangered Māui dolphin recorded in these waters. Choose from a lunchtime cruise, a sunset cruise as the sky turns gold over the Tasman Sea, or a private charter for groups and special occasions. Fresh fish and chips from Raglan Fish are available on board, along with a licensed bar — making this one of the most relaxed and memorable ways to experience Raglan.
hiking & walks
- Mount Karioi Summit Track (Karioi Track) The big one. This track takes you to the summit of Mount Karioi, known as the ‘sleeping lady’ of Raglan. A tough hike that should take around 3–4 hours one way, the path is very uneven with twisting tree roots underfoot and makes use of chains and ladders in steep sections. The reward at the top is spectacular, on a clear day you can see as far as Mount Taranaki. The trailhead is located off Whaanga Road, about 30 minutes from Raglan town. Not suitable for young children or beginners. Difficulty: Hard | Time: 5–6 hours return
- Mount Karioi via Wairake Track The shorter route up Karioi. The Wairake Track is accessed via Ruapuke Road and is the shortest route to the summit, climbing steadily through native forest, but starts with a 40-minute walk across farmland. DOC estimates the Wairake Track takes 2–3 hours to the summit and 2 hours back. A good option if you want the summit views with a slightly less brutal approach. Daylight hours only, respect the farm access. Difficulty: Hard | Time: 4–5 hours return
- Ngarunui Track One of the most accessible and popular walks in the area. Accessed from Wainui Road, the Ngarunui Track is a 20-minute one-way track offering stunning and expansive views of the Raglan coastline, eventually leading to the beach where you can walk along the seashore. The path down to the beach goes through a lovely patch of coastal forest, full of nīkau palms, kawakawa, and kōwhai trees. Once you reach the beach, you are greeted by the famous black sand and the wild west coast surf. A perfect morning walk before a surf session. Difficulty: Easy | Time: 40 minutes return
- Water Race Track A great extension to the Ngarunui Track for those wanting more forest time. You can access the Water Race Track from Upper Wainui Road, which adds another 20 minutes or so but meets up with the Ngarunui Track on Wainui Road, taking you through dense coastal forest. Perfect for a weekend walk with friends looking for a bit more bush immersion. Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Time: 1 hour return
- Waireinga / Bridal Veil Falls A short but spectacular walk just outside Raglan. Walk to the top and down to the base of these spectacular 55-metre falls. The track to the top is suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, an attractive, easy walk through native forest following the Pakoka River. Two viewing platforms at the top provide spectacular views, and the track continues down stairs to the bottom where there is a magnificent view directly across the pool and up at the falls. Access is off Kawhia Road, about 20 minutes from Raglan. Difficulty: Easy | Time: 30–60 minutes
- Te Toto Gorge Lookout A quick but dramatic walk with serious wow factor. Just a short drive from Raglan, Te Toto Gorge Lookout offers stunning views of the rugged west coast and the Tasman Sea. From the carpark, it’s just a short walk to reach the lookout where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking coastal scenery. The gorge is a deep chasm carved into the coastline, well worth combining with the Karioi hike as they share the same carpark off Whaanga Road. Note the road is narrow gravel, drive with care. Difficulty: Easy | Time: 15–20 minutes return
- Kaitoke Creek Estuary Walk A peaceful, nature-focused walk great for birdwatching. This walk takes you along the Kaitoke Creek estuary on a mix of gravel tracks and boardwalks, carrying you over the mudflats for a close-up look at this special environment. You’ll be surrounded by regenerating native bush, with harakeke (flax) and tī kōuka (cabbage trees) lining the path, with views across the estuary to Raglan town and the sleeping lady profile of Karioi maunga in the distance. A 4.0km out-and-back trail that can be accessed from Robinson Road, Wainui Road, or Kaitoke Street, taking about 20 minutes one way. Dogs welcome on lead. Difficulty: Easy | Time: 40 minutes return
- Wainui Bush Reserve Perfect for native bush lovers. A network of paths through beautiful native bush, accessed from Wainui Road, taking you through coastal forest with tree ferns, nīkau palms, kawakawa, and kōwhai all in abundance. On the way down you’ll find a lookout with extensive views of the beautiful Raglan coastline and beyond, eventually ending at the beach where you can continue your walk along the seashore. A lovely, quieter alternative to the more popular Ngarunui Track. Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Time: 1–1.5 hours
- Kopua Reserve Waterfront Loop A gentle, flat walk ideal for families and casual strollers. A short waterfront loop walk that passes Kopua Reserve, a boat ramp, Raglan Kopua Holiday Park, Raglan Airfield, and the Raglan & District Museum. A great way to get your bearings when you first arrive in town, with lovely harbour views throughout. Pram and wheelchair friendly. Difficulty: Easy | Time: 45–60 minutes

At the Raglan Wharf you’ll find Tony Sly with beautiful pottery and homewares, all wheel-thrown on site in a studio you can peer into while you browse. The glazes are drawn from the Raglan landscape: earthy greens, watery blues, and chalky whites inspired by the harbour. Perfect for a meaningful gift or a piece to use every day at home.
- Soul Shoes — Raglan Wharf A Raglan institution since 1973. Soul Shoes at the Raglan Wharf stocks handcrafted leather shoes, bags, and belts. One of the more refined boutiques in town, worth a browse if you’re after something considered rather than mass-produced.
