Hike Mt Karioi

A challenging vertical adventure with the best 360-degree views in the Waikato.

Hiking Mount Karioi is the ultimate rite of passage for anyone visiting or living in Raglan. This isn’t your average forest stroll; it’s a rugged, steep, and exhilarating climb up an ancient, extinct volcano. Standing at 756 meters, Karioi (the “sleeping lady”) guards the coastline, offering views that stretch all the way to Mount Taranaki on a clear day.

The Two Ways Up

There are two main tracks to the summit, and choosing the right one depends on your fitness and how much of a “scramble” you enjoy:

  1. Mt Karioi Track (The “Main” Track): Starts from Te Toto Gorge. This is the more scenic but more technical route. It involves using fixed chains to pull yourself up rock faces and navigating narrow ridgelines.
  2. Wairake Track: Starts from the car park on Kawhia Road. This is shorter and slightly less technical, but it is a relentless, steep uphill slog through the bush.

WHY VISIT

  • The “Chain” Sections: Experience the thrill of the Te Toto Gorge route, where you’ll use steel chains to navigate steep rocky outcrops.
  • Te Toto Gorge Lookout: Even if you don’t do the full hike, the start of the track offers an incredible view of the ancient Māori stone garden sites and the sheer drop to the ocean.
  • Unrivaled Views: At the summit, you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Raglan bar, the harbor, and the rolling green hills of the Waikato.

What You’ll Find

  • Diverse Ecosystems: Transition from coastal forest into sub-alpine shrubs as you gain altitude.
  • The “Lookout” Rock: A famous halfway point on the Te Toto side that offers a perfect (and terrifying) photo op over the Tasman Sea.
  • The Summit Tower: A small radio tower marks the official peak, with a nearby boardwalk to protect the sensitive mountain bog.

⚠️ Note

Mount Karioi is a serious hike. The weather can change in minutes, and the track gets extremely muddy and slippery after rain. Allow 3–4 hours for a return trip on the Wairake track, and 6–7 hours for the Te Toto Gorge return. Bring plenty of water and sturdy boots!
