Walk in Wainui Bush Park

A peaceful labyrinth of native bush and birdsong just steps from the coast.

Wainui Bush Park is one of Raglan’s best nature bush walk, offering a serene escape into a lush, regenerating coastal forest. Located just across the road from the popular Wainui Reserve, this park provides a cooler, shaded alternative to the beach, with a network of winding trails that meander through ancient ponga ferns and towering native trees. It is a place of quiet contemplation where the roar of the Tasman Sea fades, replaced by the trickling of small streams and the rhythmic song of native birds.

WHY VISIT

  • The Perfect Summer Escape: The dense canopy provides a natural umbrella, making it the ideal spot for a walk on those scorching Raglan afternoons.
  • Dog-Friendly Adventure: Unlike many of the more restricted DOC tracks, this park is a favorite for local dog walkers looking for an off-leash sniff-fest (under control, of course!).
  • Family-Sized Exploration: The tracks are varied enough to feel like an adventure but gentle enough for little legs to manage without a fuss.

What You’ll Find

  • Regenerating Rainforest: A beautiful mix of nikau palms, totara, and kauri that showcases the resilience of New Zealand’s coastal flora.
  • Native Birdlife: A high density of Tui, Fantails (Piwakawaka), and Kererū that are often surprisingly bold and curious.
  • Stream-Side Trails: Peaceful paths that follow the natural contours of the land, crossing small wooden bridges and hidden gullies.
